Originally held every three years until 1983 and then every two years, the event became an annual tournament from 2005 onward, excluding Olympic years. Earlier entry rules restricted associations to limited spots, with qualifying rounds conducted when entries exceeded 64 players.
By 2010, regulations were streamlined, allowing a maximum of four entries per discipline and ensuring continental representation. The most successful players in the tournament are Lin Dan, with five men’s singles titles, and Carolina MarĂn, with three in women’s singles.
