Best European Betting Sites

Finding the best betting sites in Europe is not as simple as naming one bookmaker for every player. Europe is not one betting market. Each country has its own rules, licences, regulators, age limits, payment options, and restrictions on advertising or bonuses.

Some players want a bookmaker that is fully licensed in their own country. Others search from outside their home country and want access to a reliable European betting operator that accepts international players, supports common currencies, offers English-language service, and has a clear record of licensed activity.

There is also a brand question. Some readers prefer a bookmaker with roots in an EU country. Others are ready to register with a British bookmaker, as long as that operator is legal and available where they live.

Ihor Balanchuk
That is why this page does not treat “European bookies” as one fixed list. It compares Europe from several angles: quick bookmaker picks, country-by-country rules, local regulators, licensing hubs, and major multi-licensed brands.

The aim is to help different types of players find the safest and most relevant option for their location, not just the biggest name in the market.

Offers in this block may be shown based on your IP address, location, and availability set by advertising partners. This means different users may see different bookmaker offers.

Some advertised bookmakers may not hold a licence in your country. If you register with an operator that is not licensed by your local gambling regulator, your rights may not be protected under local law. In case of disputes over deposits, withdrawals, account blocks, bonuses, or unpaid winnings, your local regulator may have limited or no power to help. Always check the bookmaker’s licence, terms, restricted countries, and responsible gambling tools before creating an account. 18+ only. Gamble responsibly.

Best Sports Betting Sites in Europe by Country

Europe does not have one betting licence. There is no single approval that makes a bookmaker legal across the whole continent. Each country sets its own rules for sports betting, including who can offer bets, which regulator supervises the market, what age limit applies, and whether private EU bookmakers can operate at all. The European Commission also notes that EU countries organise gambling services under their own national frameworks, with different models across the region.

This is why a betting site that is legal and popular in one European country may be unavailable, restricted, or unlicensed in another. Some markets use open licensing, some rely on a state monopoly, and others block or prohibit commercial betting. In a few cases, regulation can also differ inside one country or jurisdictional area, especially where gambling powers are split between regional authorities.

The table below brings these differences together in one place. It lists each European country or betting jurisdiction, whether it is part of the EU, the sports betting regime, the relevant regulator, the minimum betting age, and a short selection of popular legal bookmakers where a regulated market exists.

For some countries, the table also includes links to our local betting site reviews. Follow those links to read more detailed guides with our picks for the best bookmakers in that country, including licensing notes, market coverage, payments, mobile experience, and responsible gambling tools.

European Betting Hubs Explained

Betting hub means a jurisdiction that is commonly used by online gambling companies to license, manage, or support international betting operations. These hubs are not always large player markets themselves. Their main role is to provide a regulatory base for remote gambling companies, sportsbook platforms, casino brands, betting exchanges, software suppliers, and other gambling-related businesses.

European betting companies may apply for these licences for several reasons. A hub licence can help an operator build an international business structure, work with payment providers, partner with B2B suppliers, and show that the company is supervised by a recognised gambling authority. For some brands, it is also part of a wider multi-licence strategy, where the operator holds one hub licence and several local licences in countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, or the UK.

However, a betting hub licence is not the same as a licence to operate everywhere in Europe. A Malta, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, or Alderney licence does not automatically make a bookmaker legal in every European country. In regulated markets, the operator usually still needs local approval from the national regulator.

The main European betting and remote gambling hubs are:

Betting Hub Regulator Typical Role
Malta Malta Gaming Authority Major EU remote gambling hub for sportsbook, casino, and B2B operators
Gibraltar Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner Strong sportsbook hub used by several major UK and international brands
Isle of Man Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission Remote gambling hub with licensed operators, betting platforms, brokers, and suppliers
Alderney Alderney Gambling Control Commission Smaller eGambling hub used by selected operators, exchanges, and gambling service providers

If you are looking for a reliable European bookmaker with a recognised licence that may accept players from other countries, Malta is one of the first jurisdictions to check. Many international betting brands use a Malta licence as part of their European or global operating structure. For a more focused overview, read our Best Betting Sites in Malta guide, where we selected the licensed bookmakers that we consider the strongest options for players who want a Malta-regulated betting site.

  • Start with your national regulator. The safest first step is to visit the website of the gambling regulator in your country and look for its public register or list of licensed operators. For example, the UK Gambling Commission has a public register where users can search licensed gambling businesses, domains, trading names, and regulatory actions.
  • Check the exact bookmaker and domain. Do not rely only on the brand name. Large bookmakers in Europe often use different companies, domains, and licences in different countries. A brand may be legal on one local domain but not authorised on another.
  • Make sure the licence covers sports betting. Some operators hold casino, poker, lottery, or B2B software licences, but that does not always mean they are approved to offer sports betting. Look for terms such as “sports betting”, “bookmaker”, “fixed odds betting”, “remote betting”, or “online betting” in the regulator’s register.
  • Remember that not every regulator publishes a clear public list. In some countries, the register may be incomplete, difficult to search, or not published as a simple public table. In that case, use the bookmaker’s own licence information as a second step, but treat it as something to verify.
  • Check the bookmaker’s footer and legal pages. Licensed operators usually publish licence details in the footer, Terms and Conditions, About Us, Regulatory Information, or Responsible Gambling section. Look for the licence holder name, licence number, regulator name, registered address, and the exact countries or domains covered.
  • Be careful with mirror sites and clone domains. Fraudulent or grey-market sites may copy the name, logo, or design of a known bookmaker. Always compare the domain shown in the regulator’s register with the domain you are using.
  • Check local restrictions. A bookmaker may hold a strong European licence but still refuse players from your country. Read the restricted countries list, account terms, KYC rules, payment rules, and withdrawal conditions before depositing.
  • Avoid betting through VPNs. If a bookmaker blocks your country, using a VPN can breach its terms and may lead to account closure, cancelled withdrawals, or loss of access to customer support.

This section focuses on major EU betting sites that have a strong presence across more than one market. I did not select these brands only because they are well known. The list is based on three main criteria:

  1. Legal operation in several European jurisdictions.
  2. Availability through a main website or local country-specific sites.
  3. Overall brand strength in Europe.

In many cases, these online bookmakers also hold a licence in one of Europe’s remote gambling hubs, such as Malta, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, or Alderney. A hub licence can be useful for operators that serve international players or manage cross-border betting activity. However, it does not replace local approval in countries where a national licence is required.

The table below shows the bookmakers that best match this profile. It includes their licensed European jurisdictions and whether they are licensed in a recognised European betting hub. This should help separate broad international brands from bookmakers that are mainly popular in one local market.

Bookmaker Licensed European Jurisdictions Licensed in European Betting Hub
bet365 Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Gibraltar, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden Gibraltar, Malta
Betfair Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Romania, Spain, Sweden Malta
Unibet Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Romania, Sweden Malta, Gibraltar
Betsson Denmark, France (via ZEturf/ZEbet), Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain, Sweden Malta
Betway Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Malta Malta
bwin Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Malta, Spain Malta
William Hill Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland, Malta, Spain Gibraltar, Malta
888sport Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland, Malta Malta
LeoVegas Great Britain, Ireland, Malta, Sweden Malta
Tipico Austria, Germany, Malta Malta
Betano Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Malta, Portugal, Romania Malta
Betclic France, Malta, Poland, Portugal Malta
Novibet Greece, Ireland, Italy, Malta Malta
BetVictor Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland Gibraltar
Paddy Power Great Britain, Ireland, Malta Malta
Sky Bet Great Britain, Ireland, Isle of Man, Malta Isle of Man, Malta
bet-at-home Austria, Germany, Malta Malta
Superbet Belgium, Poland, Romania, Serbia
Fortuna Croatia (via PSK), Czechia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia

Conclusion

  • Europe is not one single betting market. Each country has its own laws, regulators, licence rules, age limits, and restrictions.
  • There is no universal European betting licence. A bookmaker licensed in one country is not automatically legal across the whole continent.
  • The safest option for most players is a bookmaker that is licensed in their own country and appears in the local regulator’s register.
  • Some international bookmakers operate through local country-specific sites, while others use recognised betting hubs such as Malta, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, or Alderney as part of their wider licensing structure.
  • A hub licence can be a useful trust signal, but it does not replace local approval in regulated markets.
  • Players should always check the exact domain, licence holder, licence type, and restricted countries before creating an account or depositing money.
  • Large European brands such as bet365, Betfair, Unibet, Betano, Betsson, William Hill, and Paddy Power can be strong options, but their availability depends on the player’s location.
  • Local brands also matter. In some countries, online betting sites such as Fortuna, STS, Superbet, Mozzart, Tipico, Winamax, or Danske Spil may be more relevant than global names.
  • The best betting site in Europe depends on what the player needs: local legality, football markets, live betting, mobile experience, betting exchange access, EU coverage, or an international licence.
  • Before choosing any bookmaker, players should confirm that betting is legal in their jurisdiction, use only licensed sites where possible, and gamble responsibly.
